Wayne Rooney is waiting for the right opportunity before going back into coaching. The former Manchester United star is even open to working with an Under-21 team.
Rooney has struggled in his managerial career so far. He faced relegation with Derby, missed the MLS play-offs with D.C. United, lasted only 83 days at Birmingham alongside Tom Brady, and managed just 25 games at Plymouth before getting sacked.
Rooney Speaks About His Coaching Future

Rooney has no plans to quit and spoke about his next move on the Stick to Football podcast with Sky Bet. He said, “I want to return, but only if it’s the right club. I have confidence that I can turn around tough situations, but things didn’t go as planned before. Right now, I am enjoying my time with family. I even went skiing with Coleen, and I loved it.
“I am not rushing back into coaching. I am looking at different opportunities, but I will only take a job if it feels completely right. I have always taken on big challenges, sometimes believing my ideas would work instantly, but having better players makes a big difference.”
Rooney Reflects on His Time at Plymouth
Wayne also spoke about his short time at Plymouth, where he moved far from his family home. He explained, “As a manager, you are fully committed no matter where you are. It doesn’t matter if you are close to home or far away. I loved my time at Plymouth – the fans and staff were great. We just hit a bad run of form. The players gave everything, and I can’t fault them.”
Could Rooney Return to Manchester United?
Some have suggested Manchester United should bring Rooney back as a striker coach. He remains open to any role and said, “I have no problem coaching an Under-21 team or taking up a different role. I am still young and willing to learn. I just want a good group of players at a good level.”
For now, Rooney plans to enjoy time with his family. He is also likely to return to punditry before making his next move in coaching.
