Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim announced important news regarding Harry Maguire’s future at Manchester United, six months before the end of his contract with the Red Devils, on June 30, 2025.

Amorim confirmed that the club has activated the option to extend the defender’s contract for an additional year, so that the English defender will remain with the team until June 2026; indicating that the club is in dire need of leaders on the field.

During a press conference on Friday before the upcoming match against Liverpool at Anfield, Amorim spoke about Maguire’s future, stressing his dire need for him at the present time.

Amorim said in statements reported by the British radio “talkSPORT“: “We will make the decision to activate the extension option, and I spoke with him this morning and told him that he must improve his level on the field, we need him a lot at this stage, and he must also improve his role as a team leader; we all know what he went through here, but we need him at this moment.”

Amorim added of Harry Maguire: “When you look at our team, we need leaders on the pitch, he is a leader and he has to improve in that area and his performance in general, and we are happy that he will continue.”

There were doubts about Harry Maguire’s future after Amorim’s appointment, especially with other options such as Lisandro Martinez, Lenny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, but Maguire, against all odds, played four consecutive 90-minute games in the Premier League, and participated in seven matches under the Portuguese coach.

It seems that Amorim’s appointment has worked in his favour, as the defender has produced some of the best performances he has shown in his career, especially in the system in which the Portuguese coach relies on a three-man defence, which is the system that Amorim prefers.

Since joining from Leicester City in August 2019 for £80 million, a record at the time for defenders, Maguire has gone through many challenges, from periods of lack of brilliance to the team’s general struggles, as United have not witnessed much stability during this period.

Maguire has made 222 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 12 goals, providing seven assists and winning two titles, the 2022-23 Carabao Cup and the 2023-24 FA Cup.
