Man City’s Plan to Keep Rodri Away from Real Madrid

Man City midfielder Rodri Hernandez is close to signing a new deal that will put him among the club’s top earners, with a salary matching other key players.

The Ballon d’Or winner came back from a cruciate ligament injury late in the 2024–25 season. He played as a sub during Man City’s 3–1 win over Bournemouth on 20 May.

Rodri is set to play a big part in the Club World Cup this month. Pep Guardiola’s side are in a group with Wydad Casablanca, Al Ain, and Juventus.

Rodri’s current deal runs until the summer of 2027, but the Sky Blues want to keep him long term because of his top performances in recent years.

The club are working on a contract renewal and plan to raise his weekly pay. This move aims to keep him away from other big clubs, especially Real Madrid, who are now keeping an eye on the Spanish midfielder.

£300,000 per Week to Secure Rodri’s Stay

The Mirror reports that Man City want to offer Rodri a four-year extension, running to 2029, with a new weekly wage of £300,000. That’s £100,000 more than he earns now, and he looks ready to accept it without problems.

This new salary would put Rodri level with Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva as the club’s second-highest earners. But both Grealish and Silva might leave this summer. Kevin De Bruyne, the highest-paid player at £400,000 per week, will soon be out of contract and could also move on.

That would open up space in the wage bill, giving Man City room to improve the squad and raise Rodri’s pay. If that happens, Rodri could start the next season as the second-highest-paid player in the squad, behind only Erling Haaland, who earns £525,000 per week.

Reports say the Spanish star has amazed the club’s medical team with how fast he came back from his knee injury.

Rodri joined Man City from Atlético Madrid in 2019. Since then, he has made 261 appearances, scored 26 goals, and assisted 31 more. He has helped the team win 11 major trophies, including four Premier League titles and the Champions League.
