Ruben Amorim, managing Manchester United while the team sits in 15th place in the league, likely isn’t thinking much about new signings right now. However, work continues behind the scenes.
Amorim is getting good performances from a squad he didn’t assemble, which has only increased excitement about what he could achieve long-term at Old Trafford.
For now, his priority is getting the best out of the current players, and he has done that well so far. But it’s clear the squad needs key upgrades.
Among all the transfer speculation, United have reportedly been told they could sign a player considered one of the best in the world in his position. Such a move would send a strong message.

Strong Nuno Mendes claim made amid Man Utd transfer interest
The left wing-back position is a major weakness in United’s current squad. This is why the club has been linked with players like Milos Kerkez, Theo Hernandez, Alphonso Davies, Nuno Mendes, and others.
Recently, Antonee Robinson’s name has also been mentioned as a target, but among all these options, one player stands out.
Nuno Mendes emerged under Ruben Amorim at Sporting Lisbon, and his current contract and young age make him a rare opportunity in the market.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that signing Mendes in January might be too complicated, but United have explored creative ways to make the deal happen.
On Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast, Dharmesh Sheth and Sam Tighe shared updates on Mendes’ situation and United’s interest.
Sheth explained that Mendes has just 18 months left on his PSG contract. Negotiations between PSG and his representatives haven’t led to an agreement.
PSG doesn’t want to risk Mendes being six months away from a free transfer next summer, so they hope to renew his contract. If that fails, they aim to sell him quickly.
Tighe praised Mendes’ talent, saying his signing would be one of United’s biggest achievements ever.
Tighe added that Mendes might be the best left-back in the world and is definitely among the top three. Signing him would drastically improve United’s outlook.
Mendes is worth the wait if a deal is possible
United urgently need a left wing-back, but if Mendes is available, waiting six more months would be worth it.
Delaying the deal would put pressure on PSG to accept more favorable terms for United. The club also doesn’t seem financially prepared to complete such a big transfer in January.
Mendes has become United’s top target, but a deal of this size was always going to be hard to finalize mid-season.
Amorim’s connection with Mendes could play a key role. If Mendes signals interest in joining United, the club should prioritize him for the summer.
Right now, Diogo Dalot is filling the position adequately. Since United’s league season already seems like a lost cause, there’s no need for a temporary fix when the problem could be solved permanently in a few months.
